The chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is so great that ferro silicon is used as a deoxidizer (precipitation deoxidization and diffusion deoxidization) in the steelmaking industry. The content of silicon in steel shall not be less than 0.10% except for boiling steel and semi-calm steel. Silicon does not form carbide in steel, but exists as a solid solution in ferrite and austenite. Silicon can increase the strength of solid solution and the deformation hardening rate of cold working steel, but reduce the toughness and plasticity of steel. The influence on the hardenability of steel is medium, but can improve the tempering stability and oxidation resistance of steel, so ferro silicon is used as alloying agent in the steelmaking industry. Silicon also has the characteristics of large specific resistance, poor thermal conductivity and strong magnetic conduction. Steel contains a certain amount of silicon, which can improve the magnetic conductivity of steel, reduce hysteresis loss, reduce eddy current loss. Electrical steel contains 2%-3% Si, but requires low titanium and boron content.
The addition of silicon in cast iron can prevent the formation of carbides and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite. Ferro silicon containing barium, zirconium, strontium, bismuth, manganese and rare earth is used as inoculant in cast iron production. High silicon ferro silicon is a reducing agent for producing low carbon ferro alloy in ferro alloy industry. Ferro silicon powder containing about 15% silicon (particle size & LT; 0.2mm), used as a weight increasing agent in heavy media beneficiation.
